Acknowledging the need for a tighter interworking between 3GPP and O-RAN Alliance that was mentioned in some presentations of the 3GPP Workshop on 6G described previously, a joint workshop on 6G coordination between these two fora was held in Sophia Antipolis, France, from 24 to 25 April 2025.
The main objectives of the workshop were to share high-level information about 3GPP and O-RAN, including 6G schedule, planned studies, etc.; to invite contributions regarding interaction and collaboration between 3GPP and O-RAN in areas, such as fronthaul, RAN intelligent controller, service management and orchestration (SMO), etc.; and to establish a high-level understanding of the work split between 3GPP and O-RAN, including future cooperation to avoid any fragmentation or conflict. The workshop had 418 registered participants, with 130 in-person attendants and 23 input contributions.
Based on the information contained in the summary of this workshop, 3GPP and O-RAN committed to establishing a common understanding of each of the organization’s roles supporting the success of 6G, avoiding duplication. In this way, the industry should leverage the strengths of both organizations to streamline development and minimize fragmentation.
